Personal Journey to the Gay Games Triathlon

Mentally trying to escape, I envisioned other moments in time where sweet, fresh things surrounded me. Yogurt ALWAYS reminds me of one thing: Eye Trauma! In an effort to combine family time with exercise time, and to increase Lennie’s fitness level, I signed everyone up for an event in the city. Lennie, kind soul that she is, walked the venue with Niamh, checking out vendor tents and taking pictures while I mentally prepared for my race, stretching and pacing the starting line. Lennie’s main duty, besides ensuring our daughter wasn’t lost or stolen, was to make sure the energetic made it to the starting line for the kid’s heat. Barely hearing the final PA call for all little tykes, Lennie grabbed Niamh’s hand and barreled through the crowd, as politely as possible, toward the white stripe 50 yards across the open field. Zig zagging a collection of strollers, dogs, and toddlers, a gap opened in the crowd and Lennie leaned forward to burst through, and that’s when time stood still. Lennie lunged into the gap and in her blind excitement she failed to notice a scrap of garbage on the grass, a random bit of trash absently tossed aside by a child, bored with the free yogurt sample. Using a non technical physics formula, let me explain what happens when a voluptuous woman, moving at full forward speed, stomps on a stationary object full of projectile goop: The goo comes out at rocket fast pace and stays in a straight trajectory until colliding with another stationary mass – in this case, a small black boy, waiting, patiently for a race to start. Remembering the boy, hours after his yogurt escapade, red eyed and squinty, gave me the public transportation distraction I needed to swallow down my granola and finish reading my mystery book.

A discovery journey of the world of triathlon, obstacle course races and everything in between.

After completing my first Olympic Distance triathlon race in August 2014, I was itching to race in another triathlon. One of the races I had signed up for got cancelled and there weren’t any other races nearby around the corner. A 1.9km swim starts the day of, with a 90km bike ride before finishing up with a 21km run – each of the sport is already tough on its own, what more having to complete all of them in one day. Having little experience in triathlon races, begin looking for triathlon coaching. I spent the first 3 months to train on my base with Coach Philip Yip purely on running and cycling, and later did my 70.3 training program with Coach Felipe Loureiro of Breakaway Training. Being someone renowned in the triathlon field, Craig is really humble and honest about his struggle in life with juggling training and family like all of us do. The ideal duration is to give you one year to build up the distance and endurance; adding 1-2 half-Iron distance and OD races to keep the momentum going. Reason being if you just train for a year without putting in few races, you wouldn’t push yourself to the limit to improve your performance. Having my dad witness the event itself it would help him understand the sport better and all the training that I’ve put in the past couple of months. I dedicate my finishing to God – for blessing me with supportive family and friends, especially my parents for being supportive in my sport/fitness journey; training friends – for putting in the miles with me; swim coach Amir of Swimon – for stroke corrections sessions; Coach Philip Yip – for the foundation training; and Coach Felipe Loureiro of Breakaway Training, for the effective training coaching program and believing in me.
