Being a good triathlete date

There are other things to talk about besides training and racing. Yes, I know that most of your time is spent training, eating, training, sleeping, training, etc. Yes you are busy, yes training takes up a lot of time, yes you can travel to cool places for races. No racing, training, crazy bedtimes/wake up calls, weird nutrition requirements. You’ve trained really hard, show off that sexy athlete body! And every athlete deserves a little release now and then. Just as you’re making time for your training in your precious schedule, you need to make time for the important people in your life. All the early morning training sessions where your perky 5am alarm woke them up. The encouragement they’ve provided in training and cheering on race day. Someone who will go out on your training runs with you, who may want to do the same races as you. Just make sure you don’t spend more time with this person than your significant other that they are neglected or they become jealous of your training buddy.

There are three macronutrients: fat, carbohydrate, and protein. Fat and carbohydrate are sources of energy meaning that they can be used for fuel during exercise. The differences between fat and carbs are that carbs are meant to be an immediate source of fuel and are also used in higher proportions during higher intensity, shorter term exercise. Fat is also used in higher proportion is longer duration exercise and lower intensity. Finally, carbs can be converted to fat and stored for use later. Protein on the other hand cannot be converted and stored as fat. Fat is used in higher proportions in longer duration, lower intensity exercise. This small amount of carbs actually enables your body to burn the fat that it already has stored for the majority of the energy that your workout requires. Yes, it is true that you burn a higher portion of fat during long distance exercise, but it is not entirely fat – it’s still a mix of fat and carbs. When it’s not burned, it’s stored on the body as fat.

Sarah’s Triathlon Adventure: May 2006

The yellow caps move forward and we run into the water to get a couple minutes of warm-up. Speed is my friend and I pass yet more cyclists and runners at the end of their race. Competition! I’m secretly hoping she’s not a really fast runner, but only the next 50 minutes will tell. The run continues this way for another couple kilometers. I’m running slowly but surely up the hill, and suddenly my side becomes tight. My breathing is labored, and it’s not long before a fellow runner notices how cramped I am and tries to ease my pain by saying he’s cramping, too. The sight of overweight college girls in bikinis running around with water and Gatorade has never been such a sight for sore eyes. Somebody hands me a banana, and my fellow runner who was cramping before runs up. I’m using everything I have just to stay running. What happened on that run, while upsetting, was very powerful for me, and it reminded me once again of how mental strength is just as important as physical strength.

Oklahoma State receivers coach Kasey Dunn and his daughter bonded this summer by finishing a triathlon

STILLWATER – Kasey Dunn will reach a point this fall when he wishes he could spend time with daughter Kayla. Kasey Dunn started running soon after his football career ended. Kayla knew her dad had tried to convince her mom to do a triathlon, but her mom wasn’t interested. Months passed without Kasey finding a race, and Kayla gave up on the idea. Before the football team left Stillwater for Phoenix and the Cactus Bowl, Kasey got to share the good news with Kayla. During the week when Kasey was recruiting or traveling and Kayla was going to school or doing swim practice, they’d have to train on their own. Kasey might bike to work, then run around Boomer Lake at work. They’d discuss training, Kayla sharing what she knew about swimming, Kasey doing the likewise with biking. Kasey and Kayla didn’t see each other for the first three hours of the race in Lubbock. Kayla finished the swim about 20 minutes before Kasey, and the first part of the bike, she was feeling good and riding fast.
