Gregerson TRI

Two years in a row as a participant, it’s been this race – for a handful of different reasons – that keeps me energized and ready to come back for another. Along with it being the close to the 2012 season, the MG Tri this year would mark my last triathlon race in the beloved 25-29 age group that I’ve been competing in since starting the sport. As per usual, I was able to get my crappy night of sleep the night before the race, even though I was sleeping in my own bed. Happily, Saturday morning turned out to be great race weather, with sunshine poking through right before the start, and providing a little bit of cloud cover during the bike and run portions. The Maple Grove area did get a few spits of very light showers, but thankfully, I was done racing by that point. Being in the sprint race this year, I was provided with the wonderful opportunity of standing around for a couple of hours after transition closed to wait for my wave to start. My age group was assigned to wave 18 – 18! – to start the race. Usually, my strategy in wave swim starts is to hang back, pick a spot off to the side, and then just swim around everyone in the water and lead the pack with the other strong swimmers around the course. There were a couple of areas where I do recall having to slow down for other racers as they moved a little too far to the left and didn’t allow for passing racers, but other than that I was able to turn in a quick bike split. True to form, Maple Grove’s residents in the neighborhoods were all out in their front yards to cheer on the racers, and those people helped carry me the many of the other racers through.

I haven’t been running as much, but over the last few months I added in bike and swim workouts in order to train for the Iron Girl Sprint Triathlon that I finished on August 13.th. My race in June was supposed to be a Try-a-Tri but at the last minute, as I was on the beach in my dorky bright green swim cap, some lightning appeared over the lake, so that was a no-go. For my next Try-A-Tri we received an email a few days before that the swim route had changed. I personally love the swim leg, but I was a bit nervous as I hadn’t been able to complete any open-water swim workouts. We had received a lot of rain in the weeks leading up to the race, so we couldn’t start the swim route on the shallow beach where it normally starts, so we would be swimming an out-and-around course that started in deep water. Even with my rough start and the tough conditions, my swim time was not far off my first Try-a-Tri swim time from a few years ago. The icing on the cake of my Triathlon Summer was the Iron Girl Sprint Triathlon – the ultimate girl power event which consisted of a 500m swim – 20km bike- 5km run. What made the swim different for me was the addition of my friend’s wet suit. In analyzing my races, I was quite happy to see that my swim and bike time averages were faster during the longer race, and that the average pace of my run was only slightly slower. I wanted to start this blog to write about running and being active in general, because I try to make it a part of my daily life, even when life gets extremely busy when juggling a full-time job outside the home and being a mom to two very active boys.
