One More Triathlon 2014

That’s right – I’m talking about working out on weight machines. Weight machines have a strong application towards: 1) helping to provide stability and support for a weak muscle; 2) helping to provide a safe motion when balance is a factor; or 3) assisting in fitness maintainance during an injury. The rest of the time, people who work out on weight machines are simply building muscle that has no significant functional application. The major muscle groups are strengthened, but when an individual is no longer supported by the weight machine, they simply have a muscle that can provide a strong contraction with little to no support from the other stabilizing muscles. The absence of multiple ranges or planes of motion basically means that you are getting a very strong contraction from the deltoid, while completely ignoring the rotational muscles, the stabilizing muscles, and the supporting muscles. The deltoid is able to produce a very strong force, but if the rotator cuff, or other supporting muscles such as the low back, are not in the same shape, you’re either going to tear your rotator cuff or throw your low back out. Squatting: Involves bending at the knees and the hips, while keeping the back straight, and lifting a weight from the ground or pushing a weight that is placed on the back or chest. Pushing: Involves using the arms, chest, and shoulders to force a weight out and away or up from the body, an action that might have been used, for example, when herding animals, pushing a plow, or hoisting a weight overhead. Exercise examples: Standing Cable Chest Press, Push-up, Standing Dumbbell Shoulder Press. Pulling: Involves using the arms, chest, and shoulders, as well as the legs, to drag or pull a weight towards the body. I’ve actually found a book that is gives the knowledge to put these movement patterns together into a routine that allows for the ideal balance between muscle groups, efficient caloric burning, fat utilization, and metabolic boosting, and injury avoidance.

Claire Michel Triathlete

It’s no secret that triathlon is an expensive sport and without the financial and material support, I would not be able to live as a professional athlete. Cheers to the team that help me… …to swim, bike, run For those who know the story of my first triathlon, it was very much done at an amateur level with a borrowed bike, pink-flowered surf suit, no clip-in pedals, no tri-suit and yes a little sitting during transitions, but I was hooked on the sport. My triathlon club, the Brussels Triathlon Club, launched an initial fundraiser to kick start my first international races as well. Belgian company Bioracer has a long history of supporting Belgium Triathlon, as well as many other Elite Belgian teams, with the simple quest to make us faster. To keep my body in one piece When based in California, Gino and his team at Function Smart Physical Therapy specializing in Active Release Treatment keep me and the rest of The Triathlon Squad in one piece. To be better Last, but certainly not least, a big shout out goes to my squad mates at The Triathlon Squad who help get through the daily grind, and coach Paulo Sousa, for providing our dose of daily grind. Contrary to some perceptions of professional athletes in general, in triathlon, with the exception of the top 3-5%, most Elite triathletes on the ITU circuit have rather meager, unstable incomes. Finding an ideal location with adequate infrastructure for triathlon training, safe roads, geographic accessibility, suitable climate, and so forth is never easy. If the two images below can characterize my past two race – the World Cup in New Plymouth, New Zealand and World Triathlon Series in Gold Coast, Australia – then I am reminded of two simple truths: daily intentional work can lead to big results, but if there is no struggle, there is no progress. Hello dear readers, welcome to 2017 and my first post of the new year! In my previous blog, I outlined my decision to join the Triathlon Squad based in Poway, California.

From bar bet to fitness craze for weekend warriors: a genealogical analysis of the Ironman® triathlon: Leisure/Loisir: Vol 39, No 1

The inaugural Ironman® triathlon was held in Hawaii in 1978. From the initial event with 14 participants, Ironman® triathlons are now hugely popular, global sporting events in which both elite and non-elite triathletes participate. Following Foucault’s genealogical approach, in this paper, I consider what combination of material and discursive factors or conditions may account for the creation of the Ironman® and its growth over the last 35 years. Based on the analysis of qualitative materials including television broadcasts, multi-sport magazines, and popular texts, my central argument is that the feminist movements and related anti-feminist backlash of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, along with the development of an obesity discourse within neoliberal forms of governance, all contributed to the growth and popularity of the event and what is now a significant amount of cultural capital connected to the title of Ironman®.
