The Right Stuff

Sandy, Utah native Heidi Strickler was planning to major in Physical Therapy when she went to Seattle Pacific University on a soccer scholarship, but she took her first nutrition class her freshman year and found her calling. Strickler also became a serious Cross Country/Track & Field runner her Junior year at SPU after transitioning from soccer. She completed the year-long Dietetic Internship at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill., then spent 3 months at home in Salt Lake City playing in the mountains before returning to Seattle for potential work. Her first job was in an eating disorder and mental health recovery clinic. Strickler went to work for Experience Momentum Inc. in January 2015, about the same time she started a two-year online program through the International Olympic Committee to earn a sports nutrition diploma. At Experience Momentum, she teaches fitness classes and works with individual clients, from 17-year-old high school athletes to 71-year-old triathletes, including professionals, Olympic competitors, recreational runners, and those who want to lose weight, manage diabetes, and overcome eating disorders or cancer. She also holds monthly seminars and leads grocery store tours for clients and others on a weekly basis. Last year, Strickler was directing Experience Momentum’s sponsored multisport team when she asked coworkers to recommend products that would benefit the group. One co-worker introduced her to The Right Stuff, which he had used with athletes in the past and uses personally to head off illness at the first sign of trouble. Strickler has also shared the product with clients, including an IronMan triathlete who suffered high sweat losses and severe cramping while training for Kona last summer until he tried The Right Stuff.

So here is the short version of my summer racing and training since the end of the qualification period and in the lead up to the Olympic games. Due to the busy international race schedule, it was nice to race on home soil for once. Besides being a bit sick, we incorporated this race into a bigger training block, so I was uncertain for how it would go. Training camp Bretagne: July 12-18 Along with five team mates from the Brussels Triathlon Club, we did a week training camp in Bretagne in the small village of Feins. European Cup Rotterdam Only a short 2hr drive from Brussels, the European Cup in Rotterdam was a good opportunity to get a bit of race tempo and to preview the course of the Grand Final in 2017. As I rounded the last turn in the lead with 500m to go to the finish, I was able to run down that blue carpet and enjoy my first European Cup victory holding that finish line tape overhead! Training Camp Banyoles Directly after Rotterdam, I headed to Banyoles, Spain for a final training camp with my coach and sparring partner for the week New Zealander Deborah Lynch. It was a fun little group, with a relaxed atmosphere playing cards, chatting and eating tasty home-cooked meals between training sessions. Banyoles itself is an ideal training venue with a beautiful blue lake less than 200m from the hotel, nice running trails along the lake, rolling country roads for the bike and indoor and outdoor pool right by the lake. Training camp Uberlandia I’m now a week into my final training camp here in Uberlandia, Brazil along with some athletes from Team Belgium. The atmosphere is calm here and training is going well, but we can’t help but keep the TV on between the training sessions to cheer on our Belgian teammates and stay tuned to the Olympic magic.

I am in fact writing this on the coach on the way there- I do love Wi- fi! I’d love to say it was all my own hard work, but it really has not been, so thankyou to everyone who has donated and helped me- Recently my housemate from uni Sarah invited me to dredge the murky waters of a car boot sale in Essex. Being accosted for a DVD player at 6:00 in the morning was an eye-opening experience, but when all was said and done, we walked away with £135- So thankyou Sarah, and to what seems like every person you know for donating things to sell ????. Secondly, another boot sale was also done in Oxford. Thirdly, cheers to Uncle Mike, Auntie Pat and my cousin Phil for donating £100 between them, it has definitely gone a long way as it helped me get to the £2500 mark! Lastly for the recent donors, I would also like to thank James Brown and all the people at his office. Amongst other things James sat at work dressed in his Spartan costume- send me a picture James! I thought I would sum up James’ cracking effort by posting a screenshot of his Justgiving page. I shall see you at the Spartan Race this coming Sunday amigo! Let’s be honest, I would have absolutely no hope in hell of reaching this target without the generosity of everyone who has donated to me. For this particular post, I am going to simply leave it here. With regards to the raffle, I will draw it after Kili, as I thought adding some prizes from Africa would be cool, and the abandoned Giraffe will be drawn when I am not moving on a bus! Remember, you can still donate, if you intended to and did not get around to it, going above the target I have aimed for is no bad thing, sadly poverty does not end at £2500, so keep donating, if you want to ????. Thanks again to everyone!
